The city of San Martín de los Andes is located in the province of Neuquén, on the north bank of lake Lacar, a valley born due to the glacial action.

San Martín de los Andes emerged as a tourist village, being it main attraction the winter sports carried out in Mt. Chapelco 20 km away from San Martín de los Andes, with one of the most popular ski runs in Argentina. As time has gone by, San Martín de los Andes has grown. Today, a lot of activities can be practised, some of them being: canoeing, sailing in lake Lacar, horse-riding, trecking, adventure tourism, fishing, hunting (always in allowed sites and with the necessary permissions) and the possibility of tavelling all over the area by car or bus, visiting lake Lolog, 12 km away and Quina Quina village 18 km away from the city.
You can also visit Villa Traful and Villa La Angostura when taking the seven-lake route (this tourist circuit may be closed in winter due to huge snowfalls).
The local cuisine, is based on grilled, smoked or pickling brine (made with oil, vinegar, peppercorns and bay leaves) deer, wild sows or trout. Pierradas (grilled vegetables cooked on the guests’ tables) are an excellent option as well.
This area can be reached by air through Chapelco Airport; land transportation, by bus or by car. The main city access routes go from San Carlos de Bariloche in the province of Río Negro.
